FAQ

FAQ II: SON OF FAQ

Why did you disappear off tumblr that one time???

Okay, lol, so--I was a civilian casualty in Strikethrough: Tumblr Edition, as in all my blogs were worksafe but got deleted for no real discernable reason in the ~first strike~ of the 2018 sesta-fosta porn ban shitshow. (Here's some articles about that fiasco.) It took tumblr NEARLY A YEAR to get to my support claim (which I sent 11/20/18) and restore my blogs, which is kind of horrifying, so I spread out over dreamwidth and pillowfort in the interim. Even though it's nice to have my inspo blog (and all links to it) back, tumblr's wonky algorithms are still in effect AND lots of people have just mcfucking left so I'm not on there as often as I used to be.

You can find some of my essays (as well as my translations of Logica and Fallenstar and scripts to Revue Starlight) on [community profile] flightworks, my art on pixiv, my own original games/games I was a staff member on at itch.io, and games I translated in this post. I'll probably be hosting remote content warnings for big plot spoilers here in this journal from now on.

In addition to my old art blog dialoguelostloop, I have a backup one with the same url on pillowfort now too. I will be uploading artwork to both as well as to pixiv. Pillowfort is very new and still trying to get things straightened out so they sometimes have signups unavailable for technical reasons but if you want to follow me on there feel free.

If you're looking for other stuff, I have a directory post here.

Why did you reject my follow request on Twitter? :(

Probably some combination of "I don't know you", "I can't tell from your profile how old you are", and/or "your profile says you're under 18", because it's not a public account and my external profile says in allcaps that it's a grownups only space!!!

If I catch people requesting to follow me multiple times over a short period I will probably block them; please learn what the word "no" means!

May I draw fanart for your original games and/or fanfiction?

Sure! If you drew fanart for a specific fic leave a link in the comments and I'll add a link to it in the fic's end notes.

I'd rather people not draw NSFW art of Teagan (i'm not gonna say that it's IMPOSSIBLE to do erotica of a sex-repulsed ace character in a thoughtful/meaningful way but these are my ocs so i get to make the rules lol), and ask that you age my child and presexual characters up if you want to draw NSFW art of them. Thanks.

May I write fanfiction for your original games/based on your fanfiction?

Yes, it's fine to write fanfiction for original games that are completed. As for writing fanfiction based on my fanfiction, please approach me about it first/make sure you fill in the "inspired by" form on AO3 when posting it.

Guidelines for NSFW content are the same as fanart.

May I make fangames/mods for your original games?

No lmao???????????????????? If you have fanfiction burning in your heart just go write some fanfiction like the rest of us ao3 is literally right there

May I translate your original games into another language?

I do my own Japanese translations because I'm fluent, but in case of other languages, come talk to me about it. You will need to have played whatever game you want to translate, and I will need to see your resume & to be put in touch with other gamedevs whose work you've translated in the past.

May I translate your fics into another language?

Only if you translate canon they/them(/other neutral or neopronoun) users like the Undertale humans with neutral pronouns in the target language. If yeah, then sure! Make sure you fill in the translation form on AO3 when posting it.

May I podfic your fics?

Absolutely! Fill in the "inspired by" form on AO3/link me if you're posting it elsewhere because I'd love to hear it.

May I remix your fics?

Talk to me about it first, I'd like to know what you have in mind.

May I tag your fics as kin and/or claim your original characters as kin?

Nope!

May I repost your artwork to my tumblr/some other site?

No, unless it was a gift or commission for you, in which case feel free!

feral why do you write asriel dreemurr Like That

Please watch this video (part 11 of ManlyBadassHero's convenient Let's Play) from about 12:17 to 22:40ish to refamiliarize yourself with canon Asriel behaving badly. I think that should answer your question.

What ethnicity do you draw/write Frisk and Chara as?

Frisk as I draw them is Asian-American (Japanese-American mother, Korean-American father) and I've done comics on/alluded in fics to how their parents' cultural schism impacted them growing up. Their eye color is due to a genetic pigmentation issue. (Frisk from gongs that put the town into a song has a different intersex condition and different health issues in general, and so has dark gray eyes, which is what my generic Frisk design would have had if not for said genetic pigmentation issue.)

My design for Chara is Ashkenazi on their mother's side. They are white-passing as long as they aren't standing next to someone white (comparing their skin tone to my art of Prase, my Token White Human, should make this clear lmao). Their cultural identity is touched on in depth in my body of work.

if you're drawing fanart of either of them, please... try not to draw them too pale... i can direct you towards local palettes if you're worried about it but in general a good rule of thumb is that if you're drawing them with the same tone you'd use for a white character go a little darker + aim for warm/red-gold undertones instead of undertones in cool colors.

(this actually goes for my east asian and jewish ocs too lmao)

Wait, is [Undertale monster] trans in [fic]? I'm very confused.

I think xeno gender (basically nonhuman/monster/alien creatures having a different concept of how gender works) is neat, so that's how I write the Undertale monsters. I've done a comic about this before (which you can find on tumblr, pixiv, or pillowfort) but the gist is that as I write them, all monsters choose their own genders as children and do not see genitals or secondary sex characteristics as gendered. They also don't see changing one's mind about one's gender later in life as that big a deal. Monsters who aren't familiar with human culture also tend to find human gender/the concept of cisness (esp in Western culture) weird and confusing.

(i actually did a different variety of xeno gender with the spirits in uncommon time but thats its whole own tangent lol)

Personally I'm not particularly married to body headcanons for most monsters (the exceptions are Asgore, Toriel, and Noelle) so first of all be prepared for potluck if you're poking around in any of my Undertail/18+ stuff featuring the extended cast. And second of all, if you read casual mention of a male character having been pregnant or something in all-ages fic, that's what's up with that.

How does the above work with Deltarune?

Context clues suggest monsters in Deltarune having been at least partially assimilated into human culture (the graveyard, the Christianity, everyone eating human-style physical food/meat, etc), so I think monsters probably have a more human understanding of gender in Deltarune too. (Being monsters they're probably still a lot more accepting of trans people than humans are, though, despite everything.)

I'm still not married to any body headcanons except for Asgore, Toriel, and Noelle so you should STILL be prepared for potluck... but Noelle in my Deltarune fics is a trans girl, for example. She has a distinctly trans experience of gender and is understood as trans by people around her, and this is seen as a Big Deal in a way it wouldn't be for her Undertale counterpart.

Feral please explain how you're handling bug gender in your Hollow Knight fics

Some of this is explained here already, but to elaborate, I portray the different bug societies in Hollow Knight as each handling gender in a different way. Hallownest's views on gender in general/cisness and transness in specific are pretty Western, the Hive did not have a concept of gender pre-colonization and nowadays sees gender as an extension of caste, and the spiders/mantises/pre-assimilation moths choose their own genders at specific points in their lives.

Hallownest's influence has affected all bug nations' views on gender to some extent, so characters like the titled mantises relate to the concept of transness despite their society not perceiving reproductive functions as particularly gendered. Bug species where gynandromorphism is especially pronounced, like moths, also have more indigenous gender identities than just female/male/neutral--but those identities have generally been erased in any society that has had any significant interaction with Hallownest. Any of my HK fics may have clued you in already, but we gonna talk about colonialism and cultural imperialism while you're visiting my house.

I have a strong preference for how the Radiance and Grimm's relationship is portrayed in fanworks and don't want to accidentally get a faceful of an interp I'm allergic to, would you please elaborate on how you portray them so I can know beforehand?

I feel you immensely if you suffer from these woes. I like all kinds of different reads on what Radi and Grimm are to each other, so instead of picking one for different fics like a normal person, I went "lol what if they're kagamines tho" and cast a terrible magic so that I could have my cake and eat it too.

Basically: As I write them Radi and Grimm are two different expressions of the same core concept, sort of like weird reverse images of one another. They were also Assigned Roommates (realmmates) At Birth and are childhood friends who basically pack-bonded due to sheer proximity and dint of shared experiences, despite having polar opposite interests. The split of the Dream Realm was a very drama-free and natural "we need our own rooms because we're driving each other insane" sort of thing.

They dated for a little while in their youth out of a sense of "that's what Friends Who Love Each Other are SUPPOSED to do, right???" but it didn't last for long because their interests were just too different for their strong personalities. They have put this behind them with a mutual relief that all their embarrassing firsts were with each other instead of someone they might want to impress and don't speak of it, except to pick on each other re: their current romantic pursuits.

They're still on good terms now and have the kind of super-close, zero-personal-space childhood friends with benefits relationship where onlookers might mistake them for romantic partners or for family, but it's strictly No Romo. Mortal bugs studying their legends have probably argued about what they are to each other and Grimm probably finds it hysterically funny.

tl;dr what you will find here is Rails-With-Pails Oh My God They Were Realistic Roommates + What If They Were Exes... AND BFFs

feral why do you write the hollow knight hollowknight Like That :(

An abuse victim who loves their abuser and whose abuser died before they could realize their situation was abusive, who is ALSO a cult survivor who didn't leave the cult of their own volition, is ALMOST CERTAINLY going to balk at the new worldview being offered to them. They are also probably going to be REALLY, REALLY UNPLEASANT TO DEAL WITH if not outright hostile to the people trying to help them.

THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT THEY NEED REHABILITATION, DEPROGRAMMING, AND THE SAFETY TO RECOVER. Hollow isn't disqualified from deserving care just because they're not a soft pretty passive idealized victim, and it sucks ass that xtian culture gatekeeps vital support based on whether survivors can adhere to this impossible and frankly inhumane behavioral standard.

also im pretty cranky that so many folks out there are so "i do not see it" about hollow raping radiance ONSCREEN in dream no more (also ghost raping radiance And godseeker in embrace the void for that matter!) so yeah im gonna be loud about that. the heinous shit tpk did to hollow doesnt cancel out heinous shit that hollow themself does. we need to acknowledge ALL the heinous shit happening here. like can we please have some got damn nuance in this room & also show the indigenous characters in this game the same compassion the settler ones get ffs

Will you explain [Jewish thing] you mentioned in [fic]?

If it's relevant to the story. If not, look it up yourself!!! Resources I'd suggest are My Jewish Learning, the official website for Reform Judaism, the Rabbinical Assembly, Reconstructing Judaism, and Judaism 101 (JewFAQ). I used to have a list of friendly Jewish bloggers who are willing to answer good-faith questions in my old faq but I have no idea if any of their blogs survived Strikethrough: Tumblr Edition, so alas.

I've seen you use the term "post-Christian" and would like to know what that means!

I'll probably write something more formal about this someday, but "post-Christian" is what I call the genre of fiction where no-longer-practicing Christians use specifically Christian imagery and cultural references to express feelings of disillusionment, frustration, pain, and/or betrayal over ways their own religion or general culture has let them down or harmed them. There also tends to be a common thread of repurposing Christian symbology to celebrate things like sex and queerness that conservative Christianity especially tries to suppress.

Some examples off the top of my head include Lil Nas X's "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)", some of Hozier's music (esp "Take Me To Church") and The Mountain Goats' discography, the visual novel We Know The Devil, recent netflix cartoon She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and the His Dark Materials books.

Is [binary-gendered OC with nontraditional gender presentation], like, trans or just gender nonconforming?

I get this question a lot and like... yall DO realize that this is a really weird thing to ask someone, right??????????????

All my OCs are introduced/listed by me as their actual gender, like, the one they themselves identify as. For my trans OCs this is the same for whether they are out to everyone (e.g. Uriko, Chantal, Noah, Sakakidani) or whether they are still mostly in the closet (e.g. Rei). If a character isn't or wasn't able to perform their gender the way they want to for whatever reason, expect this to be brought up in-story, whether they are trans or cis (see: Holly in ycouyo).

This is to say that I have a lot of gender nonconforming OCs, both cis and trans, and their gnc-ness in correlation with their gender identification is an extremely deliberate design choice on my part. Let us all put our middle fingers up at gender essentialism on this day and every day.

(relatedly its cool if you headcanon my binary ocs as trans as long as you stick with their canon gender. masculine trans women and feminine trans men are braver than most soldiers)

What is [nonbinary OC]'s designated sex?

I'm getting tired of this question too lmfao. Generally speaking, if it's relevant it will be touched on in-story. I have a lot of nonbinary characters like Prase and Liron whose secondary sex characteristics are plainly visible because they don't care/have little to no physical dysphoria/don't have a body type conducive to looking like an ethereal genderless waif.

Aubrey from Uncommon Time's designated sex is never touched on because they're a very private person who DOES have body dysphoria/CAN pass as an ethereal genderless waif, and does not like to reveal that sort of thing to people unless they're family/intimate partners/their personal doctor. Alto, Altair, Chantal, and Tristan (who Aubrey lives with for a few years postcanon) all know, but people they are less close to don't, and it's not like a big deal or anything. If you want to write Aubrey in something that requires touching on their assigned gender because it involves Gender Themes or is Spicie you can write them as whatever you want, as long as you respect their gender identity.

Honoka is a supernatural being who is capable of changing her body's configuration at will to suit her mood, so the concept of designated sex does not apply to her.

My 18+ stories that feature nonbinary characters employing their factory default junk have this stuff tagged (for instance, "DFAB Chara") 100% so that people who headcanon them as something else won't click on the fic and then get disappointed because they wanted to see their own body headcanons.

Now stop asking!!!!!!!!!!

When is the full version of Boku Girls Alliance coming out?

When it's done. It's like... 90% done now. A 2023 release would be nice but I wouldn't hold your breath, just in case.

Are you going to make any more games?

Maybe! I want to finish the one I'm working on first though!

Also, if I do, they will probably be indie (paid) rather than free.

Are you going to translate any other games in the future?

Probably! Most recently I did the Japanese version of my dear friend Adrienne Bazir/insertdisc5's START AGAIN START AGAIN START AGAIN: a prologue.

Don't you think you have a few too many irons in the fire...?

don't look at me lmao
