ycouyo #7 brief plot synopsis

This is a cliff's notes-style plot synopsis of under my skin, there will be flowers for anybody who just wants the basics instead of actually suffering through 19k of gun-related tension.

Chara wakes with anxiety attack-like symptoms. They and Asriel receive a phone call from Asgore and Toriel warning them that a new human has arrived who is armed with an antique gun, wants to leave the underground, and has 2 LOVE (has killed someone before).

Chara fears that this human will be hostile and could hurt someone, thinking of their own failed childhood plot to commit mass murder, while Asriel believes there could be a sympathetic explanation for the human's behavior because his parents and other war veterans also have LOVE. They contact the populace to warn them to be careful of the human. Chara continues to experience the anxiety attack-like symptoms.

Papyrus and Rufus call to inform Chara and Asriel that they deescalated the human's attempt to hold up Grillby's to obtain food, treated her to lunch, and explained the Barrier to her. Rufus explains that the human understands gun safety and should have only 5 bullets left. Chara's symptoms continue.

Chara and Asriel receive another call from Liron and Undyne explaining that Undyne and Innig were injured in a scuffle with the human, who has learned that a Boss Monster's soul is necessary to leave through the Barrier. Chara calls for a lockdown of the underground. They prepare for a fight with the human, though Asriel still hopes for a peaceful solution.

Astis calls Chara early in the morning to explain that he encountered the human, and learned that she wants to leave the underground because she feels she doesn't deserve the monsters' kindness. Later, Chara's symptoms return, and they receive another call from Mettaton saying that the human is headed towards the castle but has wasted more ammunition.

Finally, Chara is contacted by Prase, who explains that the human has been using save/load powers to avoid killing anyone on her journey through the underground, and that Chara is hypothetically able to assume control of the timeline because of their higher DT. Their symptoms have been caused by sensing the human's savescumming. Chara prepares to face the human and sends Asriel away to the throne room, telling him to take their soul and kill the human if the worst happens. This is couched in callbacks to someone else's fire because that's how we roll here.

Chara and the human meet and fight, as she intends to kill Asriel and take his soul. Chara confronts her with knowledge of her savescumming and learns that the life she took aboveground was in self-defense, and her failed suicide was out of guilt (she cannot reconcile her actions with her overly black-and-white morality and is doing a Javert). The human shoots Chara in the arm but runs out of ammunition, and Chara is able to prevent her from loading her save file. She gives up, and they destroy her gun before losing consciousness from blood loss.

Chara wakes later in the hospital to find that their injury has been treated, and that the human saved them by calling for help, bringing Asriel to perform first aid. They, Asriel, and Prase suggest that the human help Alphys study DT and find a peaceful way out of the underground in penance for her actions, to which she agrees. She introduces herself as Holly.
