the og legend. she became the first woman champion of the indigo plateau at 13 and did lots of other rad shit during her journey, including awakening the legendary dogs in the burned tower and catching raikou. she and lance were friends since meeting each other in their gym challenges and became friends with benefits in their later teens/twenties; she also met (and curbstomped) giovanni while he was just a lil nipper in the days before team rocket.
kris frequently traveled kanto and johto (and less frequently visited other regions) while an active champion to deal with natural disasters, terrorist groups etc. in her late twenties she began considering settling down both because she wanted to have a child and because some of her oldest childhood pokemon were getting on in years and might get hurt during active service. her closest relationship being with lance, she asked him to be the father of her child, with a mutual understanding that they wouldn't get married (kris being aro and uninterested in romance, and lance being awkward with humans in general). she formally retired at age 28 when she got pregnant with lyra, and moved to new bark town.
it took her neighbors (aside from professor elm, who had met her before) some time to get used to having a former champion as a resident, so there was some gawking, especially at kris' raikou. because of this kris deliberately kept her pokemon loose as much as possible in order to get people used to seeing them and in hopes of her neighbors learning that legendary pokemon are still pokemon and have the same needs as any other. it took the press a while to get bored, and occasional pokemon thieves had to be taught that kris hadn't been an active champion for so long without still being a very tough battler, but new bark town did eventually get used to her pokemon wandering around. even nowadays it's fondly recounted that since kris insisted on staying at home through the late stages of her pregnancy, she wound up having to send her raikou to go get the doctor when her water broke.
kris also relied on her pokemon frequently to help raise her daughter lyra, particularly her meganium, raikou, and furret; she sometimes let her pokemon babysit for very brief times. while lyra was still little she occasionally still got called on for crises big enough that the pokemon league needed all hands on deck, and during those times she left lyra with ethan's family or with professor elm. she dotes on her pokemon and her daughter, and after sending lyra out on her own pokemon journey when lyra turns 13 she manages part of lyra's winnings--which she also occasionally uses to fund lyra special care packages that she buys with her own champion's discount.
during the canon game timeline kris frequently receives invitations to various tournaments but turns them all down. this is because tournaments usually ban the use of legendary pokemon in the name of keeping things fair; which gets on kris' nerves, since she's been yelling for 30+ years that legendaries need normal pokemon socialization including battling on their own level. the first tournament kris ever actually accepted an invite to was the pokemon world tournament in unova during black/white 2, because she knew that her daughter as well as 5 other recent champions would be attending, and all of them had legendary pokemon of their own. she almost left in protest when she heard that the usual ban was in place, and along with the other player characters got a special legendary-class tournament held for their specific peer group.
at the current point in time kris is approaching old age, and while she's still an active trainer who participates in many global activities, she's also putting thought into what will happen to those of her pokemon likely to outlive her (such as her raikou and ninetales) when she can no longer care for them.

that nice nonverbal kid from pallet town. she grew up with bratty egotistical bully green and fellow nonverbal kid red, often stepping in to intervene a lot when green got too jealous of the attention red got from professor oak and was so mean to red that red went into shutdown mode. up through age 10 or so she was friends with both of them in that awkward proximity way where sometimes you're bffs and sometimes you hate each other but you're stuck with each other because it's a small town and you're gonna be in the same class preschool thru the end of elementary. leaf and green both set out on their pokemon journeys at age 11; red stayed behind to formally train as professor oak's successor.
as a child leaf was always a massive kris fangirl and wanted to be just like her, so she tackled her pokemon journey with grit and ambition. she's shy around strangers but cheerful and silly once she gets to know people, and communicates mostly via sign language or texting. pokemon being her special interest (and a childhood around red, whose special interest was Also pokemon but who was really into the math and science side) plus being more confident interacting with them than with people resulted in a stupidly overpowered and also very spoiled team. the pokemafia didn't stand a goddamn chance.
after walking all over the kanto gym leaders, elite four, and green, leaf fulfilled her childhood dreams of becoming champion. the league Mostly succeeded in keeping the press out of her face in light of her young age and tried not to send her on missions that seemed likely to get gory, but she still got sent out on a lot of field work (helping record pokemon distribution in kanto, observing the legendary birds). seeing her got lance thinking about his daughter, whom he hadn't had much interest in given the nature of his and kris' relationship; leaf also regularly got earfuls about professor oak from agatha and improved her relationship with green a lot by sending him the funnier stories. she also popcorned from the back row as the oaks sorted out their family issues, green took over viridian's gym, and green and red started having dokis at each other.
leaf had seen all the documents on mewtwo in cinnabar but it still came as a surprise when she encountered them in the cerulean cave while doing her usual field work. at the time mewtwo was kind of a frothing danger to themself and everyone around them due to the trauma of having been experimented on and knowing what had been done to their parent; leaf felt sorry for them and was also worried about other pokemon and humans running into them, so she caught mewtwo and stepped down as active champion in order to rehabilitate them somewhere quiet and away from society. lance was the only elite four member able to win against leaf in battle so he got to take her seat when she left.
working with the rest of her team to diy mewtwo through dbt on mt silver got leaf fond of the place, so even afterwards she wound up taking several months long vacations to just camp there and train. lance sending trainers to go fight her was sometimes just his way of trying to make sure she was still alive out there, since she'd disappear for huge chunks of time and only tell her family she was there and how long she planned to stay. leaf kicked all their asses.
...until lyra visited and managed to kick hers for once, which then led to their developing a friendship when leaf recognized lyra as kris' daughter. she wound up following lyra to johto to meet kris and lyra's boyfriends, and decided to explore johto and other regions too. she and lyra get together for battle tower challenges often, and also take lots of tournament invites. also........ they are............................. Dating................................... as of their teens, though leaf isnt involved with ethan or silver. (she's just vaguely friends with them both. also interacting with silver is kind of awkward due to both of them having beef with his dad.)
as of the sun/moon timeline leaf is on vacation with lyra in alola, overseeing the battle tree. she's on distantly friendly terms with a lot of gym leaders, elite four members, and league champions worldwide, and post sm gets called upon first to assist selene in aiding the ultra beasts in acclimating to this dimension, then to help rehabilitate nebby slightly prior to the events of swish. leaf is more confident as an adult than as a child but still Hates Speaking and only uses her voice with her pokemon, her mom, the oaks, lyra, and kris.

being raised by a champion, especially one like kris, can make for an interesting childhood. as a little kid lyra was not just very close with her mother but also extremely used to getting underfoot with her pokemon, pestering professor elm at his lab, and so on. kris still has photos of the one time lyra got into the brush at age 4 or 5 and raikou didn't merely fish her out of the tall grass but also carried her across town by the back of her clothes like a misbehaving kitten.
lyra claims not to remember that incident, but her own most treasured childhood memories tend to revolve around the times that suicune and entei--still wild and still roaming johto--ventured near new bark town in the dead of night to visit raikou. when she was old enough kris would wake her up to go watch from a distance that wouldn't scare the wild pokemon off, and tell her stories about burned tower and why the legendary dogs were so shy of people. so it's maybe inevitable that lyra grew up dreaming of following in her mother's footsteps and catching the other two legendaries for herself.
since at that time prof elm's starter chikoritas were actually bred by ethan's grandparents from kris' meganium, lyra turned a few heads in new bark town when she picked a cyndaquil for her starter instead. the cyndaquil had been part of an unwanted clutch handed off to the professor and had only barely been rehabilitated in time to be a suitable starter, but since lyra hung around the lab enough he was already familiar with her and a more appropriate choice in her case than he might have been for another new trainer.
lyra took full advantage of trainers being allowed to keep one pokemon outside their ball in johto to rotate her whole team on walkies throughout her journey. she and ethan did a lot of documenting their mons being cute in various locations. though she never quite managed to get entei (not for lack of trying), lyra did successfully catch suicune, and incorporated them into a robust team that flattened two regions' gyms, the elite four, team rocket 2: electric boogaloo, and even leaf.
lyra never grew out of being a mama's kid and is ambitious and playful. also so polyamorous and so crush-prone that kris has joked more than once about her own share of romo skipping a generation and going straight to lyra. among lyra's conquests number her childhood friend ethan, the tsundere mess of barely contained daddy issues nominally known as silver, and leaf, who lyra had crushed on for a while after leaf became champion, years before lyra actually went on her own journey and met leaf in person.
her journey was also the first time she ever met her father lance. while teaming up with him to fight team rocket, like the rest of us she raised an eyebrow at his having-dragonite-hyper-beam-some-rando habits; after learning from the other dragon tamers about their relationship she flew straight home to ask kris what her mother had seen in lance. ("honey, why do you Think i just fucked him and didnt marry him lol")
having toured the world and taken part in many different tournaments, as of sm lyra is currently in alola helping leaf run the battle tree and wondering while looking at the crop of baby champions & contenders if she and her partners were ever that tiny.

the thing is--the thing about may is, that she grew up in olivine, in johto. hanging out with her friends at the cafe. admiring the lighthouse, laughing at her friends' crushes on jasmine, hearing tall tales about kris and watching news reports about leaf and awed by lyra blowing through town when lyra was 13 and may was 10. she figured that when she was in middle school she was gonna get a starter and try the gyms and come back home and do whatever came next after that.
and then her dad took a job as a gym leader in hoenn and the whole family moved with him, and. well. may was 13! she missed her friends, she missed seeing the johto pokemon, she missed her favorite tv shows and magazines. plus her new neighbor brendan was a total fucking asshole. but she got a starter and decided she might as well go on her journey anyway. it might not be an adventure where she expected to have one, but bildungsromans are pretty cookie cutter, right?
except then teams magma and aqua showed up and, somehow, may wound up being the only journeying trainer competent enough to deal with them, so encouraged by steven stone and the hoenn league she wound up having to save the whole region from idiot ecoterrorists waking up a legendary pokemon that was so grumpy it began to cause mass droughts. while also beating her shitty sexist rival off with a stick.
well! she caught the groudon! but she also emerged from all of this feeling super resentful of everyone around her: brendan because he's an asshole and steven et al for dumping the fate of the whole region on a 13yo kid, her dad for dragging the family to this godforsaken region in the first place, leaf and lyra for getting the picturesque enjoyable coming of age journeys. (dawn too, later, for having a journey hijacked by all sorts of drama but still loving it.)
and unlike her predecessors may made some big mistakes. she lost to gym leaders and the league a lot. her blaziken got injured in battle once and wound up unable to fight while he healed; she had no other mons strong enough to take his place so she had to adopt groudon into her active roster instead. (she actually wound up coming to like them a lot; it wasn't her groudon's fault that they'd been thrust into this mess.) but she kept her starter, even though he fell too far behind to battle at the rest of her team's level.
it turns out that, shockingly, a bildungsroman will not cure depression; you need like therapy and medication and shit for that. may is doing significantly better now that she's got both of those, but she's still got grudges against a lot of the people who were around her as a kid and all of them being guilty about it doesn't endear them to her any. once dawn told her that she bets may would've gotten along with cyrus and they got in a fight about it.
may is aspec and not particularly interested in relationships. she tried pokemon contests at the recommendation of her therapist during her mid teens and stuck with them long enough to get her mightyena a nice stack of tough contest ribbons but was never interested enough to stay in the contest circuit. she and groudon are called on a lot to help with relief efforts in any water-related natural disaster; when may's mental health is doing very bad she sends groudon out with a trainer like dawn or hilda that they trust and who can handle them to make sure aid goes through even if she can't handle being there herself.

dawn grew up playing zelda games, hearing about the legendary pokemon near her childhood home, and bragging to the other kids in twinleaf about her mom's exploits as a champion pokemon coordinator, so she always got along really well with her fellow big dreamer barry. she was soooooooo excited to get a starter from professor rowan and get to take on the world herself!!!
team galactic crashing the party (repeatedly! sometimes in horrific ways!) was an unpleasant surprise, but one that dawn managed to weather without being too permanently shaken. half of this is because her temperament (and general home situation) is about as polar opposite to may's as can be--dawn lives up to her name and is Made Of Sunshine and Overflowing With Love For Her Friends And Pokemon--and the other half of this is because of the people around her. barry was a much nicer and more fun rival to have around than brendan, and lucas is like... there... and stuff. unobtrusive but like, helpful sometimes, and not a Massive Jerkwad. plus there's all the gym leaders who are nice, and looker, and most of all...
so, like, aside from general optimism and enthusiasm for adventure, the biggest thing dawn has in common with barry is that they are both as gay as the day is long. and dawn has got... like... the biggest, stupidest, giggliest crush on cynthia EVER. cool older girl who keeps showing up and encouraging her and is assured that soon they'll be peers? Big Swoon. but where barry's crushes switch targets very frequently, dawn has always kept her sights trained on cynthia. the age gap between them is not that big and becomes trivial once dawn is older, and the older dawn gets the heavier her foot is on the * FLIRT pedal. by her mid twenties the people around her are asking whether she wants to swoon into cynthia's arms or fluster cynthia into swooning herself. dawn is fine with either as long as she can get cynthia's attention.
in addition to her predecessor, dawn is on good terms with pretty much all the prominent trainers in sinnoh. she spends a Lot of time hanging out at the battleground and is a frequent competitor at the battle frontier and in super contests (where she even manages to beat her mom sometimes).
perhaps because of how most of her pokemon evolved into big tough 'mons dawn was also unfazed by the bulk and majesty of the timespace trio of legendaries and upon catching her giratina proceeded to spoil them silly. even nowadays she can often be found outside amity square complaining that her team is plenty cute and therefore deserves entry, waving her giratina's many cute contest victory ribbons in the park workers' faces to prove it, and generally picketing with weh gifs.
she first met hilda during hilda's travels of the world post-bw1 but sometimes runs into her (and rosa) also at cynthia's summer house in unova, and has bonded with hilda over a mutual love of zelda games. dawn is also friendly with serena and selene due to their all having been looker's helpers at some point, and when she heard about looker's croagunk's death she cried for a week.
everyone has crashed at dawn's villa at some point (infamously volkner and flint once invited themselves over just to flirt with each other; dawn took a selfie making a .________. face with them in the backdrop that went stupidly viral on pokemon instagram) and in adulthood she kinda keeps it available as a general halfway house where her friends can stay for free whenever whether she's there or not. she still lives with her mom in twinleaf but is looking to move to hearthome if champion work ever calms down enough for her to justify buying property there.

when the three of them left nuvema town, bianca wanted to find herself... cheren wanted to become Stronk... and hilda mostly wanted to ｂｅａｔ ａｓｓ. like dawn, a childhood playing zelda games made her very horny for adventure and invested in her the value of bravery, but hilda's love of exploration and of pokemon came bundled with aggressiveness and a fierce competitive spirit. the difference between her and cheren's pursuit of strength is that cheren wants to be the best and hilda just really likes to WIN. and if you're mean to bianca? oh buddy, forget pokemon battles, hilda will just beat the shit out of you with her fists.
this bellicose shounen manga hero set out on her journey mostly planning to take on gym leaders, randos, and her friends, so the intrusion of pokemon peta was unwelcome and unpleasant. if they weren't already sending off bad vibes, the munna incident in the dream forest was more than enough to convince hilda team plasma was full of shit--but n was an anomaly. n actually seemed to be acting out of genuine concern for pokemon and to believe what he was preaching. before long hilda and n had mutually reached the somewhat awkward friendship tier of "you're dumb and wrong about things, but i like/care about you and respect your sincerity".
n went from "cute but unfortunately wrong" to "bianca level damsel i must protect at all costs" to hilda around endgame when ghetsis revealed himself to be evil and a general bastard. so after team plasma got squared away with a lil help from looker and hilda returned to the elite four to properly get her dam championship title, naturally she took off on reshiram to try to find n and zekrom again.
this took hilda all around the world, during which she met other regions' leagues and champions, went backpacking through sinnoh with dawn and may, received an even higher stack of accolades. but over the course of two years running around looking for n and not finding his damn ass, she kinda burnt out a little. (maybe more than a little.) so much so that when she finally returned home to unova she did so incognito, told no one who she was, and wound up running a restaurant on join avenue, pretending to be an ordinary pokemon trainer for a while. it was a nice vacation from reality.
after lots of yelling from rosa, who was busy dealing with team plasma 2 electric boogaloo, hilda eventually took part in the pwt and pretended that was her actual homecoming. by that time most champion duties were well in hand via iris and occasionally rosa, so she didn't have That much dumped directly into her lap. she did at least go home and say hi to her mother and friends finally--and got her reunion with n, at long last.
in her adult life hilda is choosy about what sorts of champion duties she shoulders; with iris, alder, and rosa all active too she can get away with this. instead of making her seem like the poster girl for gifted kid burnout the way she feels it should, this just adds to her Mystique. currently she'd like to go traveling again, but her desire to backpack the shit out of galar is at war with recent restrictions on bringing non-native pokemon species into the region meaning she'd have to leave some of her team behind.
hilda has kissed both cheren and bianca in the past in a haze of youthful crushes and teen hormones; sometimes they still kiss off and on, but cheren is busy with his gym leader job and bianca has other relationships too so they're not as actively fwb as they used to be. she's flirted with some of the gym leaders but hasn't gone much further there except to accidentally gain a reputation as a suave badass heartthrob. currently she's enjoying hate makeouts with rosa and a more committed romance with n. on the strictly platonic side of things she's quite friendly with her fellow jaded regional savior may.

rosa got started on her pokemon journey tm a little late, even by unovan standards, but this was mostly because her mom wanted to monitor her for a while when she went on hrt because she'd had to switch administration methods a couple times (rosa: youre not even a HUMAN doctor mom youre a vet!!!!!!!!!!!)--and also a little because her mom didn't want her to get mixed up with team plasma since the neighbors had already had a pokemon stolen.
unfortunately for rosa's mom, her getting involved with team plasma was a bit inevitable due to her friendship with hugh, and her... friendship??? with that silly science-for-brains guy colress. it seemed like before anyone knew at all what was happening opelucid city had gotten deep frozen and ghetsis had crawled back out of the world's buttcrack and n's zekrom had gotten pokenapped and there was rosa in the thick of it throwing hands with the whole entire team plasma v2 and coming up victorious. she told you she could take care of herself mom shes a grown teenager and everything.
as a girl with many hobbies and interests beyond just battling and being the very best like no one ever was, rosa has also taken part in many of unova's other distractions. movies in pokestar studios started out as something that rosa tried out for laughs because it was there, but she quickly got hooked on performing in them--at the start of her journey she hadn't even been sure if adoring crowds would gather for a humble trans girl from aspertia city even if she made champion, but people LOVED seeing her onscreen, and she even managed to inspire a change of heart in a few plasma v2 grunts with her films. even as an adult rosa still performs in movies often, and has a huge cult following worldwide especially for her weird-ending films.
rosa additionally enjoyed her stint as a baby entrepreneur managing join avenue--although things got awkward when she accidentally hired hilda to run one of the stores. this kicked off a lot of hateflirting between the two that in following years would eventually turn into hate smooching; it was also largely rosa's needling that got hilda to come to the pokemon world tournament in driftveil and to go home and visit her mom already.
along with all the other people whose asses she kicked into becoming more well-adjusted, rosa spent quite a bit of time gathering up all of n's pokemon from the wild in order to gently give him a kick in the shins and dump them all back into his lap, then give him a bit of a Lecture about not abandoning everything just because that's the kind of behavior authority figures modeled for HIM. and while n was still buried under a small mountain of emotional pokemon, this is when rosa called hilda so that they could work out their Issues without her.
hate smooching hilda aside, rosa also has a warm fwb relationship with her old pal hugh and is in Big Gooey Love with bianca (who still sometimes seems a little bewildered as to how and why she got rosa's attention). when not socializing, battling, or shooting films at pokestar studios rosa can often be found in the humilau gym lying on one of the giant lily pads with her feet in the water, spacing out and making herself a general nuisance to the gym trainers and challengers. (marlon just lets her hang out there because he thinks it's funny.)

like rosa before her, serena's pokemon journey tm started pretty late, but rather than that being due to their own circumstances in serena's case it's because her mom grace was still in the middle of her jockeying career. it was only after the family moved to vaniville town that their home life became stable enough to send serena out on a journey. and that happened Quite soon after the family moved to vaniville--circumstances might not have been altogether conducive to serena heading out on a pokemon journey, but due to grace's line of work she very much grew up around pokemon and already wanted A Life With Pokemon.
long after the dust settled serena would explain their mindset to other folks that she had set out on her gym challenge to kick ass, spoil her pokemon silly, and buy lots and lots of clothes. systematically mulching a whole organization of pokenazis was not on that to-do list, and in fact for the first while serena encountered team flare the biggest blip they made was "obnoxious weirdos in ugly suits". but the more they became obviously up to no good the more annoyed with them serena became, and by the time their motives were revealed to be "kill all non-rich humans And wipe out all pokemon" she firmly arrived at the conclusion of Destroy On Impact.
and, like, having been born and raised to a Horse Movie Protagonist TM meant that having to rescue yveltal from team flare's clutches only made serena's THEN PERISH @ teamflare even more vehement.
lysandre politely cast level 9 Rocks Fall I Die on himself, xerosic was safely arrested by looker, and the remaining flare grunts in kalos are in various stages of rehabilitation... but this leaves malva as what serena perceives as a festering boil on their ass, and they are deeply determined to Destroy This Woman's Whole Career since finding out she was a mole/illegally logging holo caster communications and breaking communication & privacy law into a bajillion tiny pieces/manipulated diantha into total ignorance of the team flare fiasco in its entirety. looker may have agreed to leave malva alone in exchange for the xerosic thing but serena has made no such promises. she will not rest or concede championship until she has managed to pry malva loose and installed diantha or, like, maybe calem in her place.
when not scheming malva's downfall or performing champion duties, serena can usually be found hanging out with their various friends, taking extravagant vacations to visit her beloved geef shauna, or buying the ever loving SHIT out of anything they like in boutiques. serena also goes through pokemon toys like the dickens and is probably funding that entire industry in kalos by now.
during the aforementioned vacations, serena has met and befriended many of her fellow champions (and fangirled enthusiastically over rosa, whose movies she enjoys). they've also sampled the boutiques in alola but were saddened to find the general fare a bit plain for their taste (and vocally wondered to friends why alolan stores only seem to have half the colors they should).
famously, serena once attempted to bring alolan champion selene on a "retail therapy" trip to ransack galar's boutiques, but was flagged at the border for attempting to bring three non-native pokemon (her delphox, klefki, and yveltal) into the country despite regulations banning them, and got into a massive fight with border security over it that could have resulted in her being barred entry to galar permanently had its then-champion leon and corporate executive chairman rose not tried to smooth the incident over, worrying it would be bad for politics to pick such a petty fight with two prominent regional champions. reportedly, serena left the border more or less willingly after having her ear talked off about nature conservation by rose for two hours straight.
(also reportedly, selene, whose team was cleared for entry in its entirety, chose not to continue on the planned trip without serena due to the risk of death by embarrassment.)

growing up as a young kid in kanto, selene was very much a functional unit with her twin sister ailey. where ailey was the gregarious and adventurous one who dragged the two of them into trouble, selene was always more introverted and nervous, alternately following and hiding behind her sister.
selene's parents' messy divorce put an end to this era, as the twins got unceremoniously Parent Trapped; this wouldn't have been so bad if their families were going to stay in the same region (or even stay within PokeJapan), but selene's mother instead moved her half of the family all the way to alola. selene was stuck without her sisterly safety net in a brave new region, with no one to fall back on but herself.
a lifetime of growing up as the Good Kid made it so that selene's gut reaction to any feelings of resentment or despondency was to keep it on the inside. be friendly and steadfast and act fine. and, because ailey wasn't there to pull her through things, get herself through them too. at the beginning of her island challenge this tended to mean a lot of selene Wanting to say the unenthused dialogue options but smiling and saying the cheerful ones instead.
she might still have been okay through all of this except for lillie. it's pretty hard even for an 11yo kid to miss how supremely not ok lillie was, how much she needed a shoulder to lean on. and from the tapu koko incident onwards lillie latched on to selene pretty firmly. as a baby disaster bisexual with a doki, and as one of the few people lillie trusted with the details of the situation, selene felt compelled to do whatever she could to be lillie's bodyguard and therapist, to be to lillie what she felt ailey had always been for her.
so this resulted in selene dropping her island challenge whenever lillie was in need, and then getting shooed away by adults--rinse and repeat ad infinitum. everything in the world revolved around lillie, because lillie was the world, and then all of a sudden lillie was giving selene nebby and then lillie left altogether.
and selene was okay! she was okay for a good while. first she had to take care of the ultra beasts and even after that there were still her champion duties, and selene had her friends, and she spent a lot of time doing battle royals and hanging out at the battle tree fighting leaf and lyra. lillie didn't come back but it was fine. selene even put her crush on lillie behind her to date hau and gladion, and it turned out that being in a warm circle of reciprocated affection was a lot nicer and more soothing than sad pining over someone too fragile to touch.
then, when selene was 13, she learned in a letter that lillie was in the middle of her own pokemon journey in kanto, and also dating ailey. and everything stopped being fine.
to quote one of her favorite books, she basically got the depression. to make matters worse, her breakdown coincided with nebby (who had recently eyefucked a solgaleo from another dimension to produce a new cosmog) having a postpartum depression/abandonment issues meltdown and rejecting their offspring. it was bad times for everyone all the time forever.
it turns out, though, that actually admitting to yourself that your preteen bildungsroman getting hijacked by your first crush made you feel used and alienated and you've been pickling in ptsd and also too much cortisol may feel bad but still feels better than holding it all in. especially when you have your boyfriends and your friends and various regional champions swooping in to provide different kinds of support. leaf and her mewtwo were particularly helpful when it came to gentling nebby into something resembling functionality, but it was overall really nice for selene to have proof that people valued her for HER and not just as lillie's meat shield in lillie's bildungsroman test run.
so ultimately selene decided Not to disown ailey for sorta kinda NTRing her, and sent ailey nebby's baby so that it could have a better environment growing up and maybe some adventures instead of Parent Drama potentially traumatizing it.
selene has remained undefeated in championship battles since becoming alola's first champion, and in her off hours spams pokemon instagram with photos from her rotom dex's camera app. during vacations she goes on trips with the other champions to explore their regions... though she hasn't gone back to kanto or visited johto yet. maybe one day when she feels more up to seeing lillie again.

a little while after selene got started rescuing the alola region from evil moms and confused interdimensonal interlopers, ailey got started on her own pokemon journey. but... it wasn't quite like she'd imagined it. for one thing, the family's house in kanto only had her and her grumpy dad there and a lot of empty space where selene and their mom used to belong. and for another, the fun adventure she'd been picturing in her head had hinged a lot on the joy of having selene there to be like "ailey noooooo" while ailey was about to charge into something stupid headfirst.
professor oak, who had heard about the situation through red and green (who'd heard it from leaf who'd heard it from selene), pulled some strings so that ailey could start her journey with a litten instead of one of kanto's typical starter pokemon. his hope was that this would help ailey still feel connected to her sister during her journey. and it sort of did help, but it also made ailey feel even more lonely.
anyway ailey was kicking around the kanto gyms at an uncharacteristically snail-like pace, moping about her lack of sister and without even a rival to stimulate her sense of competition... and then a couple months in she ran into a young trainer about a year or something older than her having a total panic meltdown, and when ailey approached to ask what she could do, the trainer mistook her for selene!!!
so ailey was quite :O at this situation and lillie, who hadn't heard much about selene's sister except that she had one, was also quite :O. they decided to stick together from then on and help each other out!
well... lillie postcanon has had a lot of character development but still is not ok by any means, so this meant that ailey spent a lot of time trying to talk lillie through her repeated anxiety attacks & moral crises(/pseudo catholic guilt) to the tune that her love of pokemon battles and feeling strong made her the same as lusamine & everyone else who'd abused nebby for their own means. and, like selene before her, ailey wound up following lillie on a lot of diversions from the gym circuit to pursue potential ways to cure lusamine.
but unlike selene, ailey actually talked to lillie about stuff like "so why do you wanna help your mom anyway when she did so many bad things you're still holding against her?", to which lillie would be like "i just want my mom [read: the good parent i had when i was a kid] and my family back :(", a sentiment at which ailey (who let's not forget still has a lot of divorce angst) was like "oh big mood".
ailey was also more than a little impressed at/confused by lillie's shoujo sparkle filtered, somewhat more majestic than historically accurate account of selene's heroism back in alola. was that really selene??? HER selene??? the all common sense and anxiety, zero percent yeehaw selene of ailey's youth???? the idea that while ailey was moping more than paying attention to her journey, selene had risen to her challenges by taking like 50 levels in character growth... it made ailey feel a lot of complicated things, among them restlessness and frustration. she shouldn't be hoping for some regional crisis to happen so she could grow up, probably.
with these thoughts in mind ailey and lillie traversed kanto, won gym badges, and tried fighting the elite four. while lillie was out after the second round, ailey made it almost all the way to the acting champion before she lost. however, ailey was invigorated by finally hitting a wall and proposed that she and lillie do the johto gyms too before coming back for a rematch.
they did that! and while doing that, they also...................... started dating.
when ailey was 13, selene sent her nebby's cosmog offspring to raise because nebby wasn't in any state to parent. (and as ailey's geef and therefore ailey's newest team member's other mom, it is now lillie's turn to have some big complicated feelings wrt the events of pokemon sunmoon.) with that cosmog all raised up into a solgaleo and 16 badges under her belt, ailey is currently plotting to hit the indigo league like a truck, and then go travel to other regions until she reaches alola and can reunite with her sister on equal footing.

gloria's best friends growing up were her neighbor hop... and books. very much a dreamer but also extremely reserved, as a little kid she tended to be cast by hop as his sidekick in their backyard adventures--the bookish well of common sense to his gung-ho chosen one, and so on. she always tended to keep her truest feelings and self hidden from everyone under a veneer of quiet politeness. compared to hop, who so very clearly was bursting to follow in his beloved brother's footsteps even from a young age, in those days people's first impression of gloria was that she was very unassuming. her favorite subject matter--knights, space magic, demons, dragons--didn't register against her demeanor.
then hop recruited gloria to be his rival/recurring obstacle meant to make him stronger in the Legend of Hop (by hop) and she rocketed out of the gates with the same rapacity he did. everyone except hop and gloria's mom did a double take. ("do people think i picked her as my rival just because she was THERE???" hop would later exclaim on more than one occasion.) by the time she defeated kabu, gloria was already gathering attention as a dark horse in the competition.
crashing through the wild area, learning about and helping with sonia's research, and kicking massive amounts of ass in front of screaming arena crowds was absolutely everything gloria had ever dreamed of. actually in her element for probably the first time in her life, she came alive in ways that very few people had ever seen before.
but the further the competition progressed, the more gloria began to wrestle with feelings of guilt over her relatively smooth sailing: hop was in the tournament to fulfill his longstanding dreams, bede wanted to repay his childhood benefactor, marnie wanted to save her hometown... and gloria just wanted to, what, have a good time? be the main character in her own life for once? did that really justify crushing other people's surely worthier dreams just because she happened to be better at pokemon than them? if gloria ever cried at night about it--especially in regards to marnie who was so cute and nice and who she didn't want to hate her--that's between her and her tent/hotel room and her pokemon.
her messy feelings got Even Messier while hop was Goin' Through It because, yknow, it Really is pretty rich of the guy to arbitrarily elect her the Bad Guy of his sportsball career and then get passive-aggressive about it later. she may have had a front-row seat to the development of his raging inferiority complex but Comeeeeeee Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
and THEN there was whatever the grownups and Older Teens were doing and trying (badly) to keep secret. the first time sonia et al told gloria not to worry about it bc she's a kid and had her own stuff to do she was like "well, can't argue with that i guess" but the more obvious it became that the grownups were Not Handling Anything At All Actually the more =______= gloria got about it. you could AT LEAST explain whats going ONNNNNNNNN UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
when chairman rose did an oopsie and it turned out that the adults actually couldn't handle things worth shit, though, gloria stepped up to punch the situation into submission (like, via her pokemon)... and proceeded to punch all the other situations (leon, hop, the dumb hair bros, hop x2) into submission afterwards. she Is tired of being nice and she Would like to go apeshit; she has saved the region from a very high dragon and she WANTS to Be The Guy, she deserves it as much as ANYONE does.
currently gloria is spending her time camping in the wild area, making a grown fucking man (leon) cry into his hat at the battle tower, blushing at marnie, asking various adults what they're doing about the eventual energy crisis (Yes she's put two and two together about that she's 13 whole years old and isn't an idiot), getting fucking buff on the isle of armor, and exploring the crown tundra.

the og legend. she became the first woman champion of the indigo plateau at 13 and did lots of other rad shit during her journey, including awakening the legendary dogs in the burned tower and catching raikou. she and lance were friends since meeting each other in their gym challenges and became friends with benefits in their later teens/twenties; she also met (and curbstomped) giovanni while he was just a lil nipper in the days before team rocket.
kris frequently traveled kanto and johto (and less frequently visited other regions) while an active champion to deal with natural disasters, terrorist groups etc. in her late twenties she began considering settling down both because she wanted to have a child and because some of her oldest childhood pokemon were getting on in years and might get hurt during active service. her closest relationship being with lance, she asked him to be the father of her child, with a mutual understanding that they wouldn't get married (kris being aro and uninterested in romance, and lance being awkward with humans in general). she formally retired at age 28 when she got pregnant with lyra, and moved to new bark town.
it took her neighbors (aside from professor elm, who had met her before) some time to get used to having a former champion as a resident, so there was some gawking, especially at kris' raikou. because of this kris deliberately kept her pokemon loose as much as possible in order to get people used to seeing them and in hopes of her neighbors learning that legendary pokemon are still pokemon and have the same needs as any other. it took the press a while to get bored, and occasional pokemon thieves had to be taught that kris hadn't been an active champion for so long without still being a very tough battler, but new bark town did eventually get used to her pokemon wandering around. even nowadays it's fondly recounted that since kris insisted on staying at home through the late stages of her pregnancy, she wound up having to send her raikou to go get the doctor when her water broke.
kris also relied on her pokemon frequently to help raise her daughter lyra, particularly her meganium, raikou, and furret; she sometimes let her pokemon babysit for very brief times. while lyra was still little she occasionally still got called on for crises big enough that the pokemon league needed all hands on deck, and during those times she left lyra with ethan's family or with professor elm. she dotes on her pokemon and her daughter, and after sending lyra out on her own pokemon journey when lyra turns 13 she manages part of lyra's winnings--which she also occasionally uses to fund lyra special care packages that she buys with her own champion's discount.
during the canon game timeline kris frequently receives invitations to various tournaments but turns them all down. this is because tournaments usually ban the use of legendary pokemon in the name of keeping things fair; which gets on kris' nerves, since she's been yelling for 30+ years that legendaries need normal pokemon socialization including battling on their own level. the first tournament kris ever actually accepted an invite to was the pokemon world tournament in unova during black/white 2, because she knew that her daughter as well as 5 other recent champions would be attending, and all of them had legendary pokemon of their own. she almost left in protest when she heard that the usual ban was in place, and along with the other player characters got a special legendary-class tournament held for their specific peer group.
at the current point in time kris is approaching old age, and while she's still an active trainer who participates in many global activities, she's also putting thought into what will happen to those of her pokemon likely to outlive her (such as her raikou and ninetales) when she can no longer care for them.

that nice nonverbal kid from pallet town. she grew up with bratty egotistical bully green and fellow nonverbal kid red, often stepping in to intervene a lot when green got too jealous of the attention red got from professor oak and was so mean to red that red went into shutdown mode. up through age 10 or so she was friends with both of them in that awkward proximity way where sometimes you're bffs and sometimes you hate each other but you're stuck with each other because it's a small town and you're gonna be in the same class preschool thru the end of elementary. leaf and green both set out on their pokemon journeys at age 11; red stayed behind to formally train as professor oak's successor.
as a child leaf was always a massive kris fangirl and wanted to be just like her, so she tackled her pokemon journey with grit and ambition. she's shy around strangers but cheerful and silly once she gets to know people, and communicates mostly via sign language or texting. pokemon being her special interest (and a childhood around red, whose special interest was Also pokemon but who was really into the math and science side) plus being more confident interacting with them than with people resulted in a stupidly overpowered and also very spoiled team. the pokemafia didn't stand a goddamn chance.
after walking all over the kanto gym leaders, elite four, and green, leaf fulfilled her childhood dreams of becoming champion. the league Mostly succeeded in keeping the press out of her face in light of her young age and tried not to send her on missions that seemed likely to get gory, but she still got sent out on a lot of field work (helping record pokemon distribution in kanto, observing the legendary birds). seeing her got lance thinking about his daughter, whom he hadn't had much interest in given the nature of his and kris' relationship; leaf also regularly got earfuls about professor oak from agatha and improved her relationship with green a lot by sending him the funnier stories. she also popcorned from the back row as the oaks sorted out their family issues, green took over viridian's gym, and green and red started having dokis at each other.
leaf had seen all the documents on mewtwo in cinnabar but it still came as a surprise when she encountered them in the cerulean cave while doing her usual field work. at the time mewtwo was kind of a frothing danger to themself and everyone around them due to the trauma of having been experimented on and knowing what had been done to their parent; leaf felt sorry for them and was also worried about other pokemon and humans running into them, so she caught mewtwo and stepped down as active champion in order to rehabilitate them somewhere quiet and away from society. lance was the only elite four member able to win against leaf in battle so he got to take her seat when she left.
working with the rest of her team to diy mewtwo through dbt on mt silver got leaf fond of the place, so even afterwards she wound up taking several months long vacations to just camp there and train. lance sending trainers to go fight her was sometimes just his way of trying to make sure she was still alive out there, since she'd disappear for huge chunks of time and only tell her family she was there and how long she planned to stay. leaf kicked all their asses.
...until lyra visited and managed to kick hers for once, which then led to their developing a friendship when leaf recognized lyra as kris' daughter. she wound up following lyra to johto to meet kris and lyra's boyfriends, and decided to explore johto and other regions too. she and lyra get together for battle tower challenges often, and also take lots of tournament invites. also........ they are............................. Dating................................... as of their teens, though leaf isnt involved with ethan or silver. (she's just vaguely friends with them both. also interacting with silver is kind of awkward due to both of them having beef with his dad.)
as of the sun/moon timeline leaf is on vacation with lyra in alola, overseeing the battle tree. she's on distantly friendly terms with a lot of gym leaders, elite four members, and league champions worldwide, and post sm gets called upon first to assist selene in aiding the ultra beasts in acclimating to this dimension, then to help rehabilitate nebby slightly prior to the events of swish. leaf is more confident as an adult than as a child but still Hates Speaking and only uses her voice with her pokemon, her mom, the oaks, lyra, and kris.

being raised by a champion, especially one like kris, can make for an interesting childhood. as a little kid lyra was not just very close with her mother but also extremely used to getting underfoot with her pokemon, pestering professor elm at his lab, and so on. kris still has photos of the one time lyra got into the brush at age 4 or 5 and raikou didn't merely fish her out of the tall grass but also carried her across town by the back of her clothes like a misbehaving kitten.
lyra claims not to remember that incident, but her own most treasured childhood memories tend to revolve around the times that suicune and entei--still wild and still roaming johto--ventured near new bark town in the dead of night to visit raikou. when she was old enough kris would wake her up to go watch from a distance that wouldn't scare the wild pokemon off, and tell her stories about burned tower and why the legendary dogs were so shy of people. so it's maybe inevitable that lyra grew up dreaming of following in her mother's footsteps and catching the other two legendaries for herself.
since at that time prof elm's starter chikoritas were actually bred by ethan's grandparents from kris' meganium, lyra turned a few heads in new bark town when she picked a cyndaquil for her starter instead. the cyndaquil had been part of an unwanted clutch handed off to the professor and had only barely been rehabilitated in time to be a suitable starter, but since lyra hung around the lab enough he was already familiar with her and a more appropriate choice in her case than he might have been for another new trainer.
lyra took full advantage of trainers being allowed to keep one pokemon outside their ball in johto to rotate her whole team on walkies throughout her journey. she and ethan did a lot of documenting their mons being cute in various locations. though she never quite managed to get entei (not for lack of trying), lyra did successfully catch suicune, and incorporated them into a robust team that flattened two regions' gyms, the elite four, team rocket 2: electric boogaloo, and even leaf.
lyra never grew out of being a mama's kid and is ambitious and playful. also so polyamorous and so crush-prone that kris has joked more than once about her own share of romo skipping a generation and going straight to lyra. among lyra's conquests number her childhood friend ethan, the tsundere mess of barely contained daddy issues nominally known as silver, and leaf, who lyra had crushed on for a while after leaf became champion, years before lyra actually went on her own journey and met leaf in person.
her journey was also the first time she ever met her father lance. while teaming up with him to fight team rocket, like the rest of us she raised an eyebrow at his having-dragonite-hyper-beam-some-rando habits; after learning from the other dragon tamers about their relationship she flew straight home to ask kris what her mother had seen in lance. ("honey, why do you Think i just fucked him and didnt marry him lol")
having toured the world and taken part in many different tournaments, as of sm lyra is currently in alola helping leaf run the battle tree and wondering while looking at the crop of baby champions & contenders if she and her partners were ever that tiny.

the thing is--the thing about may is, that she grew up in olivine, in johto. hanging out with her friends at the cafe. admiring the lighthouse, laughing at her friends' crushes on jasmine, hearing tall tales about kris and watching news reports about leaf and awed by lyra blowing through town when lyra was 13 and may was 10. she figured that when she was in middle school she was gonna get a starter and try the gyms and come back home and do whatever came next after that.
and then her dad took a job as a gym leader in hoenn and the whole family moved with him, and. well. may was 13! she missed her friends, she missed seeing the johto pokemon, she missed her favorite tv shows and magazines. plus her new neighbor brendan was a total fucking asshole. but she got a starter and decided she might as well go on her journey anyway. it might not be an adventure where she expected to have one, but bildungsromans are pretty cookie cutter, right?
except then teams magma and aqua showed up and, somehow, may wound up being the only journeying trainer competent enough to deal with them, so encouraged by steven stone and the hoenn league she wound up having to save the whole region from idiot ecoterrorists waking up a legendary pokemon that was so grumpy it began to cause mass droughts. while also beating her shitty sexist rival off with a stick.
well! she caught the groudon! but she also emerged from all of this feeling super resentful of everyone around her: brendan because he's an asshole and steven et al for dumping the fate of the whole region on a 13yo kid, her dad for dragging the family to this godforsaken region in the first place, leaf and lyra for getting the picturesque enjoyable coming of age journeys. (dawn too, later, for having a journey hijacked by all sorts of drama but still loving it.)
and unlike her predecessors may made some big mistakes. she lost to gym leaders and the league a lot. her blaziken got injured in battle once and wound up unable to fight while he healed; she had no other mons strong enough to take his place so she had to adopt groudon into her active roster instead. (she actually wound up coming to like them a lot; it wasn't her groudon's fault that they'd been thrust into this mess.) but she kept her starter, even though he fell too far behind to battle at the rest of her team's level.
it turns out that, shockingly, a bildungsroman will not cure depression; you need like therapy and medication and shit for that. may is doing significantly better now that she's got both of those, but she's still got grudges against a lot of the people who were around her as a kid and all of them being guilty about it doesn't endear them to her any. once dawn told her that she bets may would've gotten along with cyrus and they got in a fight about it.
may is aspec and not particularly interested in relationships. she tried pokemon contests at the recommendation of her therapist during her mid teens and stuck with them long enough to get her mightyena a nice stack of tough contest ribbons but was never interested enough to stay in the contest circuit. she and groudon are called on a lot to help with relief efforts in any water-related natural disaster; when may's mental health is doing very bad she sends groudon out with a trainer like dawn or hilda that they trust and who can handle them to make sure aid goes through even if she can't handle being there herself.

dawn grew up playing zelda games, hearing about the legendary pokemon near her childhood home, and bragging to the other kids in twinleaf about her mom's exploits as a champion pokemon coordinator, so she always got along really well with her fellow big dreamer barry. she was soooooooo excited to get a starter from professor rowan and get to take on the world herself!!!
team galactic crashing the party (repeatedly! sometimes in horrific ways!) was an unpleasant surprise, but one that dawn managed to weather without being too permanently shaken. half of this is because her temperament (and general home situation) is about as polar opposite to may's as can be--dawn lives up to her name and is Made Of Sunshine and Overflowing With Love For Her Friends And Pokemon--and the other half of this is because of the people around her. barry was a much nicer and more fun rival to have around than brendan, and lucas is like... there... and stuff. unobtrusive but like, helpful sometimes, and not a Massive Jerkwad. plus there's all the gym leaders who are nice, and looker, and most of all...
so, like, aside from general optimism and enthusiasm for adventure, the biggest thing dawn has in common with barry is that they are both as gay as the day is long. and dawn has got... like... the biggest, stupidest, giggliest crush on cynthia EVER. cool older girl who keeps showing up and encouraging her and is assured that soon they'll be peers? Big Swoon. but where barry's crushes switch targets very frequently, dawn has always kept her sights trained on cynthia. the age gap between them is not that big and becomes trivial once dawn is older, and the older dawn gets the heavier her foot is on the * FLIRT pedal. by her mid twenties the people around her are asking whether she wants to swoon into cynthia's arms or fluster cynthia into swooning herself. dawn is fine with either as long as she can get cynthia's attention.
in addition to her predecessor, dawn is on good terms with pretty much all the prominent trainers in sinnoh. she spends a Lot of time hanging out at the battleground and is a frequent competitor at the battle frontier and in super contests (where she even manages to beat her mom sometimes).
perhaps because of how most of her pokemon evolved into big tough 'mons dawn was also unfazed by the bulk and majesty of the timespace trio of legendaries and upon catching her giratina proceeded to spoil them silly. even nowadays she can often be found outside amity square complaining that her team is plenty cute and therefore deserves entry, waving her giratina's many cute contest victory ribbons in the park workers' faces to prove it, and generally picketing with weh gifs.
she first met hilda during hilda's travels of the world post-bw1 but sometimes runs into her (and rosa) also at cynthia's summer house in unova, and has bonded with hilda over a mutual love of zelda games. dawn is also friendly with serena and selene due to their all having been looker's helpers at some point, and when she heard about looker's croagunk's death she cried for a week.
everyone has crashed at dawn's villa at some point (infamously volkner and flint once invited themselves over just to flirt with each other; dawn took a selfie making a .________. face with them in the backdrop that went stupidly viral on pokemon instagram) and in adulthood she kinda keeps it available as a general halfway house where her friends can stay for free whenever whether she's there or not. she still lives with her mom in twinleaf but is looking to move to hearthome if champion work ever calms down enough for her to justify buying property there.

when the three of them left nuvema town, bianca wanted to find herself... cheren wanted to become Stronk... and hilda mostly wanted to ｂｅａｔ ａｓｓ. like dawn, a childhood playing zelda games made her very horny for adventure and invested in her the value of bravery, but hilda's love of exploration and of pokemon came bundled with aggressiveness and a fierce competitive spirit. the difference between her and cheren's pursuit of strength is that cheren wants to be the best and hilda just really likes to WIN. and if you're mean to bianca? oh buddy, forget pokemon battles, hilda will just beat the shit out of you with her fists.
this bellicose shounen manga hero set out on her journey mostly planning to take on gym leaders, randos, and her friends, so the intrusion of pokemon peta was unwelcome and unpleasant. if they weren't already sending off bad vibes, the munna incident in the dream forest was more than enough to convince hilda team plasma was full of shit--but n was an anomaly. n actually seemed to be acting out of genuine concern for pokemon and to believe what he was preaching. before long hilda and n had mutually reached the somewhat awkward friendship tier of "you're dumb and wrong about things, but i like/care about you and respect your sincerity".
n went from "cute but unfortunately wrong" to "bianca level damsel i must protect at all costs" to hilda around endgame when ghetsis revealed himself to be evil and a general bastard. so after team plasma got squared away with a lil help from looker and hilda returned to the elite four to properly get her dam championship title, naturally she took off on reshiram to try to find n and zekrom again.
this took hilda all around the world, during which she met other regions' leagues and champions, went backpacking through sinnoh with dawn and may, received an even higher stack of accolades. but over the course of two years running around looking for n and not finding his damn ass, she kinda burnt out a little. (maybe more than a little.) so much so that when she finally returned home to unova she did so incognito, told no one who she was, and wound up running a restaurant on join avenue, pretending to be an ordinary pokemon trainer for a while. it was a nice vacation from reality.
after lots of yelling from rosa, who was busy dealing with team plasma 2 electric boogaloo, hilda eventually took part in the pwt and pretended that was her actual homecoming. by that time most champion duties were well in hand via iris and occasionally rosa, so she didn't have That much dumped directly into her lap. she did at least go home and say hi to her mother and friends finally--and got her reunion with n, at long last.
in her adult life hilda is choosy about what sorts of champion duties she shoulders; with iris, alder, and rosa all active too she can get away with this. instead of making her seem like the poster girl for gifted kid burnout the way she feels it should, this just adds to her Mystique. currently she'd like to go traveling again, but her desire to backpack the shit out of galar is at war with recent restrictions on bringing non-native pokemon species into the region meaning she'd have to leave some of her team behind.
hilda has kissed both cheren and bianca in the past in a haze of youthful crushes and teen hormones; sometimes they still kiss off and on, but cheren is busy with his gym leader job and bianca has other relationships too so they're not as actively fwb as they used to be. she's flirted with some of the gym leaders but hasn't gone much further there except to accidentally gain a reputation as a suave badass heartthrob. currently she's enjoying hate makeouts with rosa and a more committed romance with n. on the strictly platonic side of things she's quite friendly with her fellow jaded regional savior may.

rosa got started on her pokemon journey tm a little late, even by unovan standards, but this was mostly because her mom wanted to monitor her for a while when she went on hrt because she'd had to switch administration methods a couple times (rosa: youre not even a HUMAN doctor mom youre a vet!!!!!!!!!!!)--and also a little because her mom didn't want her to get mixed up with team plasma since the neighbors had already had a pokemon stolen.
unfortunately for rosa's mom, her getting involved with team plasma was a bit inevitable due to her friendship with hugh, and her... friendship??? with that silly science-for-brains guy colress. it seemed like before anyone knew at all what was happening opelucid city had gotten deep frozen and ghetsis had crawled back out of the world's buttcrack and n's zekrom had gotten pokenapped and there was rosa in the thick of it throwing hands with the whole entire team plasma v2 and coming up victorious. she told you she could take care of herself mom shes a grown teenager and everything.
as a girl with many hobbies and interests beyond just battling and being the very best like no one ever was, rosa has also taken part in many of unova's other distractions. movies in pokestar studios started out as something that rosa tried out for laughs because it was there, but she quickly got hooked on performing in them--at the start of her journey she hadn't even been sure if adoring crowds would gather for a humble trans girl from aspertia city even if she made champion, but people LOVED seeing her onscreen, and she even managed to inspire a change of heart in a few plasma v2 grunts with her films. even as an adult rosa still performs in movies often, and has a huge cult following worldwide especially for her weird-ending films.
rosa additionally enjoyed her stint as a baby entrepreneur managing join avenue--although things got awkward when she accidentally hired hilda to run one of the stores. this kicked off a lot of hateflirting between the two that in following years would eventually turn into hate smooching; it was also largely rosa's needling that got hilda to come to the pokemon world tournament in driftveil and to go home and visit her mom already.
along with all the other people whose asses she kicked into becoming more well-adjusted, rosa spent quite a bit of time gathering up all of n's pokemon from the wild in order to gently give him a kick in the shins and dump them all back into his lap, then give him a bit of a Lecture about not abandoning everything just because that's the kind of behavior authority figures modeled for HIM. and while n was still buried under a small mountain of emotional pokemon, this is when rosa called hilda so that they could work out their Issues without her.
hate smooching hilda aside, rosa also has a warm fwb relationship with her old pal hugh and is in Big Gooey Love with bianca (who still sometimes seems a little bewildered as to how and why she got rosa's attention). when not socializing, battling, or shooting films at pokestar studios rosa can often be found in the humilau gym lying on one of the giant lily pads with her feet in the water, spacing out and making herself a general nuisance to the gym trainers and challengers. (marlon just lets her hang out there because he thinks it's funny.)

like rosa before her, serena's pokemon journey tm started pretty late, but rather than that being due to their own circumstances in serena's case it's because her mom grace was still in the middle of her jockeying career. it was only after the family moved to vaniville town that their home life became stable enough to send serena out on a journey. and that happened Quite soon after the family moved to vaniville--circumstances might not have been altogether conducive to serena heading out on a pokemon journey, but due to grace's line of work she very much grew up around pokemon and already wanted A Life With Pokemon.
long after the dust settled serena would explain their mindset to other folks that she had set out on her gym challenge to kick ass, spoil her pokemon silly, and buy lots and lots of clothes. systematically mulching a whole organization of pokenazis was not on that to-do list, and in fact for the first while serena encountered team flare the biggest blip they made was "obnoxious weirdos in ugly suits". but the more they became obviously up to no good the more annoyed with them serena became, and by the time their motives were revealed to be "kill all non-rich humans And wipe out all pokemon" she firmly arrived at the conclusion of Destroy On Impact.
and, like, having been born and raised to a Horse Movie Protagonist TM meant that having to rescue yveltal from team flare's clutches only made serena's THEN PERISH @ teamflare even more vehement.
lysandre politely cast level 9 Rocks Fall I Die on himself, xerosic was safely arrested by looker, and the remaining flare grunts in kalos are in various stages of rehabilitation... but this leaves malva as what serena perceives as a festering boil on their ass, and they are deeply determined to Destroy This Woman's Whole Career since finding out she was a mole/illegally logging holo caster communications and breaking communication & privacy law into a bajillion tiny pieces/manipulated diantha into total ignorance of the team flare fiasco in its entirety. looker may have agreed to leave malva alone in exchange for the xerosic thing but serena has made no such promises. she will not rest or concede championship until she has managed to pry malva loose and installed diantha or, like, maybe calem in her place.
when not scheming malva's downfall or performing champion duties, serena can usually be found hanging out with their various friends, taking extravagant vacations to visit her beloved geef shauna, or buying the ever loving SHIT out of anything they like in boutiques. serena also goes through pokemon toys like the dickens and is probably funding that entire industry in kalos by now.
during the aforementioned vacations, serena has met and befriended many of her fellow champions (and fangirled enthusiastically over rosa, whose movies she enjoys). they've also sampled the boutiques in alola but were saddened to find the general fare a bit plain for their taste (and vocally wondered to friends why alolan stores only seem to have half the colors they should).
famously, serena once attempted to bring alolan champion selene on a "retail therapy" trip to ransack galar's boutiques, but was flagged at the border for attempting to bring three non-native pokemon (her delphox, klefki, and yveltal) into the country despite regulations banning them, and got into a massive fight with border security over it that could have resulted in her being barred entry to galar permanently had its then-champion leon and corporate executive chairman rose not tried to smooth the incident over, worrying it would be bad for politics to pick such a petty fight with two prominent regional champions. reportedly, serena left the border more or less willingly after having her ear talked off about nature conservation by rose for two hours straight.
(also reportedly, selene, whose team was cleared for entry in its entirety, chose not to continue on the planned trip without serena due to the risk of death by embarrassment.)

growing up as a young kid in kanto, selene was very much a functional unit with her twin sister ailey. where ailey was the gregarious and adventurous one who dragged the two of them into trouble, selene was always more introverted and nervous, alternately following and hiding behind her sister.
selene's parents' messy divorce put an end to this era, as the twins got unceremoniously Parent Trapped; this wouldn't have been so bad if their families were going to stay in the same region (or even stay within PokeJapan), but selene's mother instead moved her half of the family all the way to alola. selene was stuck without her sisterly safety net in a brave new region, with no one to fall back on but herself.
a lifetime of growing up as the Good Kid made it so that selene's gut reaction to any feelings of resentment or despondency was to keep it on the inside. be friendly and steadfast and act fine. and, because ailey wasn't there to pull her through things, get herself through them too. at the beginning of her island challenge this tended to mean a lot of selene Wanting to say the unenthused dialogue options but smiling and saying the cheerful ones instead.
she might still have been okay through all of this except for lillie. it's pretty hard even for an 11yo kid to miss how supremely not ok lillie was, how much she needed a shoulder to lean on. and from the tapu koko incident onwards lillie latched on to selene pretty firmly. as a baby disaster bisexual with a doki, and as one of the few people lillie trusted with the details of the situation, selene felt compelled to do whatever she could to be lillie's bodyguard and therapist, to be to lillie what she felt ailey had always been for her.
so this resulted in selene dropping her island challenge whenever lillie was in need, and then getting shooed away by adults--rinse and repeat ad infinitum. everything in the world revolved around lillie, because lillie was the world, and then all of a sudden lillie was giving selene nebby and then lillie left altogether.
and selene was okay! she was okay for a good while. first she had to take care of the ultra beasts and even after that there were still her champion duties, and selene had her friends, and she spent a lot of time doing battle royals and hanging out at the battle tree fighting leaf and lyra. lillie didn't come back but it was fine. selene even put her crush on lillie behind her to date hau and gladion, and it turned out that being in a warm circle of reciprocated affection was a lot nicer and more soothing than sad pining over someone too fragile to touch.
then, when selene was 13, she learned in a letter that lillie was in the middle of her own pokemon journey in kanto, and also dating ailey. and everything stopped being fine.
to quote one of her favorite books, she basically got the depression. to make matters worse, her breakdown coincided with nebby (who had recently eyefucked a solgaleo from another dimension to produce a new cosmog) having a postpartum depression/abandonment issues meltdown and rejecting their offspring. it was bad times for everyone all the time forever.
it turns out, though, that actually admitting to yourself that your preteen bildungsroman getting hijacked by your first crush made you feel used and alienated and you've been pickling in ptsd and also too much cortisol may feel bad but still feels better than holding it all in. especially when you have your boyfriends and your friends and various regional champions swooping in to provide different kinds of support. leaf and her mewtwo were particularly helpful when it came to gentling nebby into something resembling functionality, but it was overall really nice for selene to have proof that people valued her for HER and not just as lillie's meat shield in lillie's bildungsroman test run.
so ultimately selene decided Not to disown ailey for sorta kinda NTRing her, and sent ailey nebby's baby so that it could have a better environment growing up and maybe some adventures instead of Parent Drama potentially traumatizing it.
selene has remained undefeated in championship battles since becoming alola's first champion, and in her off hours spams pokemon instagram with photos from her rotom dex's camera app. during vacations she goes on trips with the other champions to explore their regions... though she hasn't gone back to kanto or visited johto yet. maybe one day when she feels more up to seeing lillie again.

a little while after selene got started rescuing the alola region from evil moms and confused interdimensonal interlopers, ailey got started on her own pokemon journey. but... it wasn't quite like she'd imagined it. for one thing, the family's house in kanto only had her and her grumpy dad there and a lot of empty space where selene and their mom used to belong. and for another, the fun adventure she'd been picturing in her head had hinged a lot on the joy of having selene there to be like "ailey noooooo" while ailey was about to charge into something stupid headfirst.
professor oak, who had heard about the situation through red and green (who'd heard it from leaf who'd heard it from selene), pulled some strings so that ailey could start her journey with a litten instead of one of kanto's typical starter pokemon. his hope was that this would help ailey still feel connected to her sister during her journey. and it sort of did help, but it also made ailey feel even more lonely.
anyway ailey was kicking around the kanto gyms at an uncharacteristically snail-like pace, moping about her lack of sister and without even a rival to stimulate her sense of competition... and then a couple months in she ran into a young trainer about a year or something older than her having a total panic meltdown, and when ailey approached to ask what she could do, the trainer mistook her for selene!!!
so ailey was quite :O at this situation and lillie, who hadn't heard much about selene's sister except that she had one, was also quite :O. they decided to stick together from then on and help each other out!
well... lillie postcanon has had a lot of character development but still is not ok by any means, so this meant that ailey spent a lot of time trying to talk lillie through her repeated anxiety attacks & moral crises(/pseudo catholic guilt) to the tune that her love of pokemon battles and feeling strong made her the same as lusamine & everyone else who'd abused nebby for their own means. and, like selene before her, ailey wound up following lillie on a lot of diversions from the gym circuit to pursue potential ways to cure lusamine.
but unlike selene, ailey actually talked to lillie about stuff like "so why do you wanna help your mom anyway when she did so many bad things you're still holding against her?", to which lillie would be like "i just want my mom [read: the good parent i had when i was a kid] and my family back :(", a sentiment at which ailey (who let's not forget still has a lot of divorce angst) was like "oh big mood".
ailey was also more than a little impressed at/confused by lillie's shoujo sparkle filtered, somewhat more majestic than historically accurate account of selene's heroism back in alola. was that really selene??? HER selene??? the all common sense and anxiety, zero percent yeehaw selene of ailey's youth???? the idea that while ailey was moping more than paying attention to her journey, selene had risen to her challenges by taking like 50 levels in character growth... it made ailey feel a lot of complicated things, among them restlessness and frustration. she shouldn't be hoping for some regional crisis to happen so she could grow up, probably.
with these thoughts in mind ailey and lillie traversed kanto, won gym badges, and tried fighting the elite four. while lillie was out after the second round, ailey made it almost all the way to the acting champion before she lost. however, ailey was invigorated by finally hitting a wall and proposed that she and lillie do the johto gyms too before coming back for a rematch.
they did that! and while doing that, they also...................... started dating.
when ailey was 13, selene sent her nebby's cosmog offspring to raise because nebby wasn't in any state to parent. (and as ailey's geef and therefore ailey's newest team member's other mom, it is now lillie's turn to have some big complicated feelings wrt the events of pokemon sunmoon.) with that cosmog all raised up into a solgaleo and 16 badges under her belt, ailey is currently plotting to hit the indigo league like a truck, and then go travel to other regions until she reaches alola and can reunite with her sister on equal footing.

gloria's best friends growing up were her neighbor hop... and books. very much a dreamer but also extremely reserved, as a little kid she tended to be cast by hop as his sidekick in their backyard adventures--the bookish well of common sense to his gung-ho chosen one, and so on. she always tended to keep her truest feelings and self hidden from everyone under a veneer of quiet politeness. compared to hop, who so very clearly was bursting to follow in his beloved brother's footsteps even from a young age, in those days people's first impression of gloria was that she was very unassuming. her favorite subject matter--knights, space magic, demons, dragons--didn't register against her demeanor.
then hop recruited gloria to be his rival/recurring obstacle meant to make him stronger in the Legend of Hop (by hop) and she rocketed out of the gates with the same rapacity he did. everyone except hop and gloria's mom did a double take. ("do people think i picked her as my rival just because she was THERE???" hop would later exclaim on more than one occasion.) by the time she defeated kabu, gloria was already gathering attention as a dark horse in the competition.
crashing through the wild area, learning about and helping with sonia's research, and kicking massive amounts of ass in front of screaming arena crowds was absolutely everything gloria had ever dreamed of. actually in her element for probably the first time in her life, she came alive in ways that very few people had ever seen before.
but the further the competition progressed, the more gloria began to wrestle with feelings of guilt over her relatively smooth sailing: hop was in the tournament to fulfill his longstanding dreams, bede wanted to repay his childhood benefactor, marnie wanted to save her hometown... and gloria just wanted to, what, have a good time? be the main character in her own life for once? did that really justify crushing other people's surely worthier dreams just because she happened to be better at pokemon than them? if gloria ever cried at night about it--especially in regards to marnie who was so cute and nice and who she didn't want to hate her--that's between her and her tent/hotel room and her pokemon.
her messy feelings got Even Messier while hop was Goin' Through It because, yknow, it Really is pretty rich of the guy to arbitrarily elect her the Bad Guy of his sportsball career and then get passive-aggressive about it later. she may have had a front-row seat to the development of his raging inferiority complex but Comeeeeeee Onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
and THEN there was whatever the grownups and Older Teens were doing and trying (badly) to keep secret. the first time sonia et al told gloria not to worry about it bc she's a kid and had her own stuff to do she was like "well, can't argue with that i guess" but the more obvious it became that the grownups were Not Handling Anything At All Actually the more =______= gloria got about it. you could AT LEAST explain whats going ONNNNNNNNN UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
when chairman rose did an oopsie and it turned out that the adults actually couldn't handle things worth shit, though, gloria stepped up to punch the situation into submission (like, via her pokemon)... and proceeded to punch all the other situations (leon, hop, the dumb hair bros, hop x2) into submission afterwards. she Is tired of being nice and she Would like to go apeshit; she has saved the region from a very high dragon and she WANTS to Be The Guy, she deserves it as much as ANYONE does.
currently gloria is spending her time camping in the wild area, making a grown fucking man (leon) cry into his hat at the battle tower, blushing at marnie, asking various adults what they're doing about the eventual energy crisis (Yes she's put two and two together about that she's 13 whole years old and isn't an idiot), getting fucking buff on the isle of armor, and exploring the crown tundra.
